American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, formerly the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, has honored the Valero Houston Refinery with the Distinguished Safety Award for 2011 – AFPM’s most prestigious recognition.
The refinery, which took honorable mention for the same award last year, was recognized during the AFPM Annual Meeting on March 12, and will also be honored at the National Occupational & Process Safety Conference at the AFPM’s Safety Awards Event on May 17.
The Houston Refinery, which also won the Valero Chairman’s Safety Award for 2010 and 2011, has gone two straight years without an employee or contractor injury, and more than five years without a contractor lost-time injury of any kind.
Valero Chairman, CEO and President Bill Klesse said, “This is a tremendous honor for our Houston refinery, and our entire safety effort. This is our second win, as the Wilmington Refinery won this award a few years ago. To be recognized as the best among our industry reinforces our commitment to excellence in safety. Congratulations to Rob Moore and his team at Houston, as Houston has set the pace for our company's commitment in occupational and process safety over the last several years. We appreciate their dedication and commitment to safety, and their excellent results.”
The Distinguished Safety Award recognizes AFPM member-company refineries and petrochemical plants that have achieved a superior level of safety performance. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee represented by members of the AFPM Safety & Health Committee, which examines safety performance records of individual plant locations using specific screening and selection criteria.
This award is a terrific achievement. Congratulations, Houston.
