National Academy of Engineering at Chavez High School
The Education Task Force began in 2006 with the mission of vitalizing public education in the East End. We discovered Project Lead the Way, a comprehensive nationally recognized Engineering Curriculum for high school and middle school students and the adventure began! An interactive partnership of the Chamber, Houston Independent School District and Chavez High School implemented Project Lead the Way for 9th grade students at Chavez in 2006 and continues to lead the program which has boosted Chavez to become an HISD Engineering Magnet School and one of only 21 National Engineering Academies in the nation! One grade level is added each year and today we have over 300 students in Project Lead the Way.
Rice University joined the partnership to launch a summer enrichment program for Project Lead the Way students at Chavez High School in June 2008! Students are challenged with experiential science and math classes taught by Rice master teachers, and enjoy field trips to Rice and East End businesses. The program is a pilot project for Rice, with the East End as the first beneficiary!
